PETITION
To: The City of Guelph and The Ministry of Transportation Ontario
WHEREAS The MTO's preferred plan to upgrade the Hanlon Expressway will impact negatively on the health, safety, and quality of life of the community of Guelph through increases in noise levels, air quality deterioration, isolation of neighborhoods, environmental threats, increased traffic and disruption of neighborhoods,
WHEREAS The MTO's preferred plan to upgrade the Hanlon Expressway is in conflict with The City of Guelph's strategic plan to minimize reliance on the automobile, create walkable communities, and protect our natural resources,
WHEREAS The MTO's preferred plan to upgrade the Hanlon Expressway includes the building of overpasses and interchanges through residential neighborhoods, thereby destroying the enjoyment of life created by the communal growth of a stable cultural and social environment and destroying the investment scheme sold to people at the time of purchase,
WHEREAS The MTO's preferred plan to upgrade the Hanlon Expressway will cost in excess of $50 million, public money that could be better diverted to creating an efficient system of local rapid mass transit,
WE, the undersigned, hereby petition THE CITY OF GUELPH to OFFICIALLY OPPOSE the preferred plan and the MTO TO DENY APPROVAL of the preferred plan proposing interchanges at Kortright/Downey Rd., Stone Rd., and College Ave. We request the CREATION OF AN ADHOC WORKING GROUP with representation from the citizens of Guelph and city staff to develop recommendations for appropriate development of the Hanlon supporting Guelph's strategic plan.
